I was deeply saddened to hear of the untimely death of Dr Eugene "Gene" Schultz on Sunday afternoon October 2, 2011 - apparently due to an accidental fall.

I first met Gene when I worked in the Naval Nuclear Program which was under DOE security cognizance.

Gene started DOE's CIAC (Computer Incident Advisory Capability) back in the early 1990's when Information Security was a nascent discipline.

A group of us in the program flew to Albuquerque, NM and Kirtland Air Force base for DOE INFOSEC training.

For a week, we would wend our way onto the base and up into the beautiful surrounding hills to an isolated training facility for our INFOSEC indoctrination.

Our "trainers" were Gene and Tom Longstaff both of whom went on to be giants in the field.

Over the years, I would periodically run into Gene and we both worked on an ISACA "whitepaper" initiative several years ago that discussed the convergence of physical and logical security.

Gene was the Chief Technology Officer at Emagined Security, an information security consultancy based in San Carlos, California.

He authored/co-authored five books including topics such as: UNIX security, Internet security, Windows NT/2000 security, incident response, and intrusion detection and prevention.

Gene wrote over 120 published papers and was also a certified SANS instructor, senior SANS analyst, member of the SANS NewsBites editorial board, co-author of the 2005 and 2006 Certified Information Security Manager preparation materials, and was on the technical advisory board of three companies.

Gene was a gentle soul who handled himself with style, class, and humor.  He will be sorely missed in our security "family" for sure.
